Backstage Pass Featuring The Justus League's Vandalyzm 4.18.09

On this Saturday night, it was pouring rain. As I drew closer in my car to Reggie's Backstage, the Fox Theatre was just letting out. Gobs of people were crossing the street after viewing the popular play "Rent". I'm waiting as they crossed, listening to my wiper blades go side to side across my front windshield as I'm listening to "Love Me Right" by Angel City. It's my amp music when I have to go out and shoot. The beat is so catchy as it covers Ready For the World's "Oh Sheila". I pull into a parking space just as a man is leaving so I was excited to have a close parking spot unlike the last time I had to shoot at this same venue. I run inside, flash my camera bag and rush to the restroom to check out my hair and to put together my camera.

As I came out the restroom, the nostalgic vibes of 90s music was bumping as DJ Reminisce spun the records. I began to have flashbacks to when times were all good and when music was music. There were a ton of lovely ladies delicately holding their glasses of wine in one hand and hugging friends and males with the other. The males were looking very debonair as they always do at Freetime events. I'm snapping away as more and more people enter the building despite the rain. I'm also prancing around the venue trying to keep up with the main man of the night, Vandalyzm. He's on the mic going around the room saying funny things and dancing and vibing with the crowd. This is one attribute I have always admired about Vandalyzm. I've known him many many years now and he has this natural charismatic leadership about him. I really hate I missed his most recent show, The Fallout. But I had plenty of friends who kept me abreast with mobile uploads, status messages and next day blogs. He is also very down to earth. I think I captured a few moments in which you will see what I mean. Despite the rain, I must say this was a very great turnout.

And if you want to know how Vandalyzm's album release party went last year, here it is! Don't sleep STL:

Which Lil Kim Do You Like The Best?

When I was growing up, Lil Kim was always that cool rapper chick that I admired in rap videos. She was bold, colorful and seemingly could get whatever she wanted out of life, especially with men. Ha!

Upon watching the movie Notorious, I really began to remember the drastic skin color change over the years and the change in the size of her nose. It was almost like a Michael "Jacksony" transition. I really don't understand why MJ or Kimberly Jones decided that they look better in a lighter skin complexion with a super tight nose. The world may never know....

Check out one of my favorite Lil Kim classics.

"Save A Prayer" - Duran Duran

I love the acoustic version of this song way better. You can search for the remastered version that aired on MTV in the 80s but hands down, this version makes it that much more sensual and really builds the song. 2:42 is my favorite part of the song.

You saw me standing by the wall,
Corner of a main street
And the lights are flashing on your window sill
All alone ain't much fun,
So you're looking for the thrill
And you know just what it takes and where to go

Don't say a prayer for me now,
Save it 'til the morning after
No, don't say a prayer for me now,
Save it 'til the morning after

Feel the breeze deep on the inside,
Look you down into your well
If you can, you'll see the world in all his fire
Take a chance
(Like all dreamers can't find another way)
You don't have to dream it all, just live a day

Don't say a prayer for me now,
Save it 'til the morning after
No, don't say a prayer for me now,
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after,
Save it till the morning after

Pretty looking road,
Try to hold the rising floods that fill my skin
Don't ask me why I'll keep my promise,
Melt the ice
And you wanted to dance so I asked you to dance
But fear is in your soul
Some people call it a one night stand
But we can call it paradise

Don't say a prayer for me now,
Save it 'til the morning after
No, don't say a prayer for me now,
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after

Save a prayer 'til the morning after

"Sign Your Name" - Terrence Trent D'Arby

This song is still a song that gives me the goosebumps. His voice is so beautiful and airy.... 2:22 is my favorite part of the song

Fortunately you have found
Someone who relies on you
We started out as friends
But the thought of you just caves me in
The symptoms are so deep
It is much too late to turn away
We started out as friends

Sign your name
Across my heart
I want you to be my baby
Sign your name
Across my heart
I want you to be my lady

Time I'm sure will bring
Disappointments in so many things
It seems to be the way
When your gambling cards on love you play
I'd rather be in Hell with you baby
Than in cool Heaven
It seems to be the way

Sign your name
Across my heart
I want you to be my baby
Sign your name
Across my heart
I want you to be my lady

Birds never look into the sun
Before the day is gone
But oh the light shines brighter
On a peaceful day
Stranger blue leave us alone
We don't want to deal with you
We'll shed our stains showering
In the room that makes the rain

All alone with you
Makes the butterflies in me arise
Slowly we make love
And the Earth rotates
To our dictates
Slowly we make love

Sign your name
Across my heart
I want you to be my baby
Sign your name
Across my heart
I want you to be my lady

Cruising

Have you ever gone driving and just watch how the clouds just drift gently across the sky? Ever looked so hard as to notice the earth in rotation? It's magnificent, the vast world of nature and how we are all just small pieces of the big picture....

Quick and Healthy Lunch for People On the Go

As a photographer, oftentimes it is hard to have a pre-prepped meal that is not packed with calories, grease or fat. And most of the time, I don't have time to make a meal. So I buy Michelina's Lean Gourmet meals when they are on sale 3/$4 at my local grocery store. They have a pretty decent amount of varieties and are surprisingly tasty coming in at the most 300 calories with 10g or less in fat. If you are on a 1500 calorie diet like myself, these meals are PERFECT for lunch! Today I will be eating their enchilada bake (beans, veggie sauce, white chicken, rice, tortilla chips and reduced fat cheese) which comes in at 8g of fat and 300 calories. I keep my frozen lunch at my desk until lunch to reduce the cooking time so that I can walk some of the meal off during the rest of my hour lunch break. Bon Apetit!

This Is Why I Make My Own Pizza

Two Domino's employees have been charged with contaminating food. The female employee/narrator, Kristy is a registered sex offender and Michael, the male employee is shown putting cheese up his nose and passing gas on some meat. This gives me even more reason to make my own food at home. The attached photo is a homeade pizza I made. The toppings are mushrooms, spinach leaves, roma tomatoes and cheese. Not boogers, booty vapors and hand dirt. People are trifling and the sad part is, a youtube video was the only thing that prompted their arrest and charges. SMH...

West Hunan

I am dismayed that my favorite gourmet Chinese Restaurant will be closing their doors 26 April 2009 due to rising food cost and decrease in sales. The owner Diane regretfully informed me that she believe it was mostly because of Eastbound Highway 40 being closed. With 40 being closed, it cuts off the normal route of her frequent customers. I was very saddened as I had not been in awhile only to find out yesterday that they will be closing. I really hope they can re-open at a better location or at least let me drive to their home in Ballwin so that I can pick up an order of sweet and sour chicken with crab rangoon and an orange Vess soda to go. They have been around for 26 years and I'm sad to see them go.....

Spring Fresh Faces - Corbett

In search of a portfolio refresher, I put out a casting call on model mayhem in hopes of discovering fresh faces. When I placed my casting call, about 15 eager models replied in hopes of becoming a part of my 2009 Spring Portfolio Refresher. As a photographer, I am constantly discovering day by day that there is such a pure beauty in one that does not flaunt, boast or brag. There is immense beauty in the silent and strong subject. When I received a reply from Corbett, I was immediately captivated by his piercing green eyes behind his vulnerable hands. The first photo I saw of Corbett was taken by Picturesque and it was INTENSE.
So we made plans to do a photoshoot. I was very interested in him being my model and at the tender age of 21, I saw a great deal of potential. From runways to photoshoots, his talent is natural. He molds into character very easily and was not afraid to take risks. He was very fun to work with as well. After several weeks of bad weather, the weather finally let up for us to do our shoot. When I saw his eyes, I knew that I wanted the location to be be serene and with a strong outdoors appeal. Originally we had wanted a replica of a Nautica ad. That seemed to cliche for the abundance of options we had surrounding us. We began to walk a trail through Creve Couer Park and found a happy medium that captivated the water, air and earth. We took several shots and shared many laughs. I would love to work with Corbett again and I see a very bright future in modeling for him.

Here are a few shots from our shoot together:
