Every year hundreds gather to the U-City Loop to support the local talent and to vote for their favorite local artists in various categories. I have had the distinctive honor to watch and listen to some of the most raw hip hop talent in the St. Louis underground scene.
From the renowned "Basement" series at Blueberry Hill to the infamous Hi-Point Cafe, no matter how many times the weekly installments of hip hop gatherings have ended, hip hop still prevails. Despite the rain, a nice sized crowd gathered in front of Vintage Vinyl to bear witness to the talent and likes of Vandalyzm, Rockwell Knuckles, Tef Poe, Lyfestile, Nato Caliph, Corey Black, Black Spade, Family Affair and Teresa Jenee. My favorite local djs were on deck throughout the day and night. Those djs were Needles, Spec and Trackstar. And as the night moved on I begin to feel a sense of nostalgia. As I stood in front of the stage at Blueberry Hill's Duck Room, I was taken back to the times I used to dance in the front along to my favorite songs I had bumping in my car while b-boys would start breaking near the front of the stage. Hip hop was alive and very vivid back then. Now don't get me wrong, it's not DEAD. It's alive and well thanks to the local artists who keep it alive by putting out their heart, soul, blood, sweat (literally) and tears into their art. Even as I sat back and listened to Teresa Jenee, I remembered when Blake Murphy had me listen to this ill beat he had just produced. The beat was in her song flowing like a rhythmic river coerced beautifully into a song that I will always remember. Some of greatest undiscovered talent resides here in St. Louis and if anybody has been in my car on more than one occasion, they will know how passionate I am about REAL music and how my music collection ONLY consists of local artists and classic music. This elite force of hip hop talent will mos def be a force to reckon with...
